Climbing High 13ers In Colorado's San Juan Mountains

By SE_Everett - Posted on 16 June 2008

Several years ago I made a pass through Ice Lakes Basin on my way to climb Vermillion Peak. At that time I was struck by the beauty of this incredible basin and the surrounding mountains. There are pristine lakes, amazing rock formations of different colors, and fields of wildflowers, all above tree line. Therefore, I was determined to come back and enjoy it again.

Last August (8/9-11/2007) there was a break in the monsoon season, and I headed back with my friend, Madeline, to climb the rest of the peaks in the area. To reach Ice Lake Basin, you travel U.S. 550 either south from Montrose or north from Durango to a point about 2 miles northwest of Silverton. Turn off on to South Mineral Creek Road and proceed about 4.5 miles to the trailhead just opposite the South Mineral campground.

The trail to the basin is well established and climbs through old growth forest on a series of switchbacks and then works its way above a gorge into the lower basin.
